about

The In Between by Ricky Quiñones is an album of wide-open grooves and beguiling hooks that don't let go. By turns sunny and soulful, expansive and tender, The In Between is the aural equivalent of a walk along the sun-spackled sidewalks of old-school Brooklyn with blasts of Brazilian and pan-Latin sound swirling and percolating in the air around you.

For more than a decade, Quiñones has been a go-to guitarist for such artists as Alicia Keys and India Arie. His virtuosity got its start when, at age 10, he came across a three-string guitar for sale at a Brooklyn garage sale. He plays it lefty, and his cool mastery has made him a standout in the New York music scene, including a multi-year place in the production of Fela!, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. The In Between is his first solo album, recorded in Atlanta in the summer of 2016 and produced by longtime collaborator Khari Simmons. The album is an amalgam of Quiñones's great musical loves: for the blues, for Latin music, and for the raucous honeyed sweetness of '70s pop and soul, all simmered and brewed in The In Between into something wholly unique and new.

The album's eight tracks kick off with "Little Boy," a playful, twinkling fantasy of a young, would-be romancer brought down by an older, more sophisticated woman. Two other standouts include the haunting "Firefly" and the album's title track "The In Between," which imagines a place of mutual understanding and reconciliation outside the tumult and pain of a relationship's ending. "Meu Coracao" is a sweet lullaby enlivened with a world-beat sound. "Pilgrim," written with musician Morgan Price, has a cumbia/folk feel in the Brazilian tradition. "Pilgrim" was written in Uruguay, and "Big Sky" in Buenos Aires—origins that add to the album's cosmopolitan underpinnings, which Quiñones plays off with a light, deft hand. It's an album that knows as much about joy as it does about sadness, encompassing them both as well as all the spaces in between.
